La Fayette and Slavery
La Fayette is a French nobleman who used his own fortune to help the United States in their fight for independence against the British Empire. In fact, La Fayette's army played an important role in the defeat of the British army at the siege of Yorktown in 1781. A park has been dedicated to him in Washington D.C next to the White House to honor what he has done for the United States. He had a good relationship with George Washington. After he went back to France in the 1790's with the situation of the French Revolution, he sent a letter to Washington and in the letter he addresses the question of the slavery. At the time France had abolished slavery since 1789 in its colonies. The abolition of slavery in French colonies came after the revolutionary assembly had written and implemented Human Rights in all French territories. Washington replied that Americans need the system of slavery, that they depend on it at least for the time being. Therefore, abolishing it in the United States was not feasible at the time. I just thought this was interesting to share, because i did not know slavery was abolished in French colonies in 1789, but it was restored again when Napoleon's Empire.
