Smithsonian's Use of Social Media

If you read my last article on 3D printing, your mind should already be adequately blown and it should come to no one surprise to hear that the Smithsonian is at the top of the social media curve as well. Looking at their website, they have accounts with all of the popular social networks.

They Blog more than we do.
They use the Book of Faces.
They have a Flickr.
They use Instagram.
The have Interesting Stuff to Pin.
The make Podcasts.
They chirp, or Tweet, or whatever birds do.
They probably spend as much time on YouTube as I do.
It's not on their main site, probably because they are ashamed, but they even have a Tumblr.
They kind of have a MySpace page that hasn't been updated in years, but hey, neither has mine.

The point here is that wherever we all end up, for the love of God, please utilize social media. It's free, it's easy, and it'll likely make your institution's exposure go through the roof if you use it well.
