1. The topic of technology within the public
history community is a highly debated one. Many museum professional may argue
against the incorporation of technology because it may somehow urge people to
access a collection online instead of visiting it in person. However, there is
a growing group that is supporting these resources. Some of the new technology
includes things such as scanning collections and making them available online,
or even purchasing a gift of admission for someone. However the one utilization
of technology that I find most impressive is being used by the Art Institute of
Chicago. This website has detailed maps available for all guests to search a
location collection within the building. These maps are accessible thought a
smart phone. This use of technology seems to be an appropriate and helpful tool
for those visitors that need to maximize available time in the museum. I
believe that if advancements such as this continue to be utilized in the museum
setting they will only aid these institutions.
