Music in museums

The title of this should give you a pretty good idea about the subject for this post is.  I stumbled across another blog (link below) that was describing the pros and cons of having music played in a museum.  The author, Nina Simon, poses an open question and the comments are worth taking a look at.

She acknowledges that there are definitely some museums that music would not work with at all, but she questions whether low volume music would help set a good atmosphere in some venues.  She states that in her small museum, the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, music could help break up the silence in her galleries.  However, the music could become distracting and there will surely be some visitors who have different tastes.

I can only imagine how annoyed I would be if "Somebody That I Used To Know" started playing in a musem.  There is a good chance that I would ask for my money back (assume that there was an admission fee).  I think there are a couple museums that could pull it off.  Music only seems natural at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Having different music in different galleries could help the museum's story line move along.
