1. Speaking of getting social with the
Dayton community, the Dayton Art Institute is one local example that is well
known for hosting Oktoberfest every year. This gathering provides a safe and welcoming
location for the Dayton community to gather every fall. This event also bring
in awareness to the museum where multiple booths are set up handing out
information. While I do support this event, and have every intention on
checking it out next year, it does make me wonder about the message that the institute
wishes to portray to the public. This event serves alcohol, and while all
activities are legal, it may have a negative connotation on the institute if
something were to go wrong. Is this line something that many public historians
would come close to? In the public history professionals class Mary Oliver
expressed the importance of representing your institution whether you are at
work or in the community. This makes me reflect on the image the art institute
reflects with such an even. I’m not saying “hey shut down Oktoberfest!”. I’m
simply questioning the professional image certain institutions give off with
their sponsorships.
